Carlos in the Two Hundred and Forty-Fourth World

The fashion vocabulary Carlos began building in his junior year fourth-period sewing class proved to be a valuable foundation for his first year abroad. By the end of autumn, he was dropping new phrases (Madame Grès pleats, Schiaparelli pink, innit, bruv) in the California lilt that had initially confused his classmates. And now, just before the end of the school year, while their classmates struggle with their spring project, he and his flat mate/design partner Nalin have just signed a contract with Comme des Garçons and are throwing a rave in their cavernous new loft to celebrate.

Carlos watches everyone he knows and wants to know dancing and glittering in his new loft. Jungle beats snake through the crowd and Nalin dances next to his DJ girlfriend like he has elastic bones. Carlos makes his way toward them. In his hands, a ridiculous gold gun he bought as a joke from a sidewalk vendor around Tower Bridge. It will live in their new workspace, a cheeky keepsake of their unexpected success, a talisman to remind them of the Cali gangsta and London lanksta lifestyle everyone assumed they had.

Carlos steps behind the DJ and taps Nalin on the shoulder. Everyone can see them. The reporters from the dailies lift their recorders and cameras. The models who are all taller than him raise their glasses. Carlos smiles and pulls the gun from his waistband. He points the barrel at his own face to kiss it before dramatically handing it off to his truest friend. It’s just supposed to look good for the pictures. The screams are deep and sorrowful. Again, Carlos’s life ends with a hole in his head.
